The Gruene Historic District covers 25 acres and was added to the national register of historic places on april 21, 1975. Gruene Hall, at 1281 Gruene Rd, New Braunfels, TX 78130, was built in 1878 by Henry D. Gruene, runs to About 6,000 square feet, and bills itself as the oldest continually run dance hall in texas.

Gruene sits on the north edge of town, which buys you the district and costs you the middle of it. The measured drives on this site put the hospital, the H-E-B and the interstate further from most Gruene addresses than from a downtown one, and for a household making that run daily the difference adds up faster than a weekend at the hall gives back.
The honest version of the Gruene case is not that it is convenient. It is that on the evenings you would have driven somewhere for live music, you walk instead.
